{Recipe} Southern Eats & Yummy Treats: A Taste of the South at your Fingertips!

One of our favorite clients, the Roanoker Restaurant, is featured in Southern Living’s latest recipe book, Off the Eaten Path!  Featured on the Today Show, this is a lovely book that highlights favorite Southern Dives and selected recipes that have earned them their claim to fame.  You don’t have to be from the South to enjoy Southern cooking.  Now you can have a taste of that charming Southern hospitality any time you want! We love all of the recipes, but page 237 is our favorite :-)

{Recipe} Who Else Wants Cookies?

(Image & Recipes Courtesy of Hostess with the Mostess)

There’s just something about frosted sugar cookies that makes everything right with the world for just one moment…  The soft, cake like cookie with that oh so good dreamy creamy icing, yes please!  Here is a recipe we stumbled upon from the fun blog site, Hostess with the Mostess that will help create those “life is good” moments.  Treat yourself & don’t worry about the calories today. You know what they say… a balanced diet is a cookie in each hand :-) Happy Baking!!

THE BEST FROSTED SUGAR COOKIES
Ingredients
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tbsp vanilla
3 cups flour
3 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
Directions
Preheat oven to 400º.
Mix dry ingredients in a bowl & set aside.
In a separate bowl, combine butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Beat until mixed well. Add the dry ingredients in slowly & mix well. Chill for at least an hour to stiffen the dough. Roll the dough out with a rolling pin & cut shapes with cookie cutters OR form dough balls and flatten into thick circles with your hands.
Bake 8-10 mins or until just the edges of cookies start to turn a very, very light golden brown. Don’t over-bake. For an extra-doughy consistency, remove the cookies before the edges start to brown.
*****
FROSTING:
1/3 cup butter, melted
1 Tbsp vanilla
3 Tbsp milk
1 egg yolk (optional)
5-6 cups powdered sugar (thicken to desired consistency)
food coloring
Whisk butter, vanilla, milk and egg yolk together. Slowly mix in powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency. If it gets too thick, add more milk in very small amounts, about 1 tsp at a time.

Why Do You Relay? WDG goes Relaying for Life!

2011 Relay For Life Parade; Salem, VA

This June, Eric & I participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Salem, VA.  The theme this year was “Toon Out Cancer” where Relay teams decorated their campsites with favorite cartoon characters.  WDG had the enormous privilege of creating items for the group such as certificates, team tent décor graphics, and parade banner!
Cancer has affected the lives of millions, including Eric and I, so this event is very near & dear to our hearts.  This event is a huge yearly fundraiser that raises money to help create a world with more birthdays and allows participants to celebrate loved ones who have fought the fight against cancer, remember lost loved ones, and fight back against cancer.  Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back. Get involved with your local Relay For Life and help create a world with more birthdays! http://www.relayforlife.org/relay/

To a brighter tomorrow,

{Brag Book} Divine Wine Design! WDG Designs for Biltmore!

I am extremely excited and honored to announce that we have designed the new 2011 Christmas at Biltmore Wine Label!  If you are not familiar with the Biltmore Estate, it is a beautiful mansion, chateau, insert word here for “huge digs”, magnificent place nestled in the picturesque mountains of Asheville, North Carolina.  Built between 1889-1895, originally housed on 125,000 acres of land, Biltmore was home to George Vanderbilt and is, today the largest privately owned home in the US.  Needless to say, this is a huge honor! Approximately 1 million visitors stop by the Biltmore Winery yearly to experience award winning wines.
Eric & I visited Biltmore last year and had a wonderful time!  We were there in November and had the opportunity to see the estate all decked out with beautiful Christmas lights, trees, and trimmings.   And yes, we did partake in the wonderful wines, particularly the Century White, my favorite!  We both have great memories of Biltmore and are excited to be part of such a special place!  Be sure to look for the 2011 Christmas at Biltmore Wine, on shelves this fall!!

Cheers!

Welcome to the inaugural edition of “Pugs in Design,” a small sampling of pugs featured in the design world.  We are huge dog lovers and are especially crazy for our two little pugs, Atticus Finch & Sylvie Grace!  There’s just something about those little smooshed faces & curly-q tails that send us over the moon!   This segment honors those playful, mischievous, waddlers… Enjoy!
